Beaches of Normandy.

Normandy was incredible for many reasons, but here are a few:

The weather was warm and delightful.
I got to wear my chacos.
I was reunited with the beach, got to stand on the other side of the Atlantic.
West Wing watching at night.
Crepes.
The 7 and a half hour bus ride there and back went by quick cause our group is hilarious - and singing songs from Les Mis with Anna is a wonderful way to pass the time.
Finally a dinner paid for by Furman... and some pretty good dinner conversation too.

On a serious note:

High school history lessons (sorry Smiths) can't compare to actually standing on the beaches of Normandy, visiting the American cemetery there, and standing inside a German bunker, looking out at the cliffs that US soldiers had to climb up while facing German fire as well as friendly fire from misinformed US planes overhead. Can't even begin to understand the tragedy of so many lives lost and yet the triumph of this horrible war coming to an end.

Standing on Utah Beach.

View from the German Bunker.

First apartment pic, finally!

Adair and I at Omaha beach.

While the rest of the group went to see tanks and weapons,
we took a moment to frolic and dance in this beautiful field.
Typical.

Thankful for Normandy, the bravery of soldiers, pretty weather, and of course dancing.

  1. MG, it's uncle Dave, thank you for posting this blog. I just got the address from your mom at David's wedding. We missed you at the wedding but talked about you, in a good way, of course. Your trip seems so cool. You really are fortunate to be able to have the experiences you seem to be having. Your pics and your entries are great, quite the writer you have become. Glad to see you are having such a good time. Sorry you had to celebrate your 21st away from home but, as you said, not too shabby celebrating in Europe. When you come to Pittsburgh, as me for a beer and I will be sure to card you. please let us know if we can do anything for you. I will be following your progress now, so behave or I will have to make another surprise visit to HHI and rearrange your room. Take care and be safe !!!
